MY APPROACH

Out Here, Together

EPIC SCENES

I specialize in guiding couples to breathtaking, unforgettable locations

With years of experience climbing, exploring, and photographing some of the most iconic landscapes in the world, I know how to find the perfect light and composition no matter where we are. Long hikes, big climbs, early starts, and late nights make the best memories.

STEADY HANDS

I lead with empathy, bringing calm and confidence to your day

My approach is gentle but assured: I’ll help with direction when it matters, yet I know when to step back and let your moments unfold naturally. I want to help you feel like the best version of yourself… and that may mean I tell the occasional dad joke. (You’ll know them when I tell them. The dad jokes will be apparent. )

EVERLasting MEMORIES

I photograph the moments that showcase your love at its best

The moments in between are often the most magical. My goal is to preserve your memories beautifully and authentically, so when you look back at your photos, you can feel the joy, connection, and adventure of the day all over again.

Picture the laughs becoming contagious, the posed turning into the natural, and the light creating an amazing scene.

I photograph these moments.

I capture love and adventure.

COMMON GROUND

Every couple is different, but I work best with those who value presence, connection, and a bit of adventure. If you’re drawn to meaningful places, natural moments, and a calm, intentional experience, we’ll likely be a great fit.

Meet James

In 2016, while dangling 3,000 feet up the side of Yosemite's El Capitan, I snapped a few images of two climbers making the first free ascent of The Dawn Wall. That early documentation changed my hobby into a profession and turned it into partnerships with brands like Patagonia, The North Face, and Arc'teryx. My photos tell stories that capture emotional moments in the most beautiful places. After 10 years as a professional photographer, shooting weddings and elopements across the world, I've crafted an approach that narrates events through amazing pictures.

CAPTURING LOVE & ADVENTURE

Through My Lens

  • “James hiked 3 miles on a snowy road just below Mount Bierstadt, hid in some alpine shrub and captured the moment I proposed, bringing champagne, and photographing a moment we’ll never forget.”

    Pat and Andrea
    Mount Blue Sky, CO

  • “James’ photos of the wedding and our family mean just as much to me as the wedding ceremony. He captured the essence of family in his pictures.”

    Nick & Kate
    Acton, ME

  • “James met with my wife and I just outside of Red Rocks for our elopement. The photos turned our incredible, and James made us feel comfortable throughout the shoot.”

    Chris & Krist-lee
    Las Vegas, NV

  • "James captured beautiful moments both in our home before and during our rugged and windy mountain top ceremony. He was both fun to be around but also discreet at our very small ceremony. Highly recommend!"

    Libby and Matt
    Reno, NV

  • "James knows how to make you feel comfortable! Which is all you can ask for natural looking photos! He is willing to go out mountains for epic photos! So if he want to have an adventure, he is your guy, not to mention getting an epic landscape!"

My story

In a Vermont high school dark room, I developed my first few photos. After graduating I moved to Yosemite National Park and documented the outdoors for the next two decades as a writer and photographer, publishing bouldering guidebooks to Yosemite and Bishop, located in the Eastern Sierra. An avid rock climber, I have made first ascents across the world and free climbed (used a rope but just my hands and feet) Yosemite’s El Capitan in a day.

Between occasional stand-up bits, obsessive rock climbing, and a love for travel, I photograph the moon, take portraits of friends, and snaps pictures of the climbing life. As my passion for photography has grown, I’ve transitioned from shooting on the walls to weddings and capturing engagements, and elopements across the world.

I love documenting intense feelings in beautiful places.
